Culture & Heritage Alliance (CHA)

A non-profit in Fayetteville, NC dedicated to preserving and sharing the art, culture, and stories of indigenous communities.

On-site demonstrations include:

  • Introduction to Drum/Storytelling – a combination of introductory dances and drumming, teaching participants how to effectively use the drum and the power of storytelling.
  • Drum and Rhythm (Drum and Dancers) – This class is for those interested in discovering the power of the drum and the rhythms of West Africa, teaching djembe techniques in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
  • Cultural Regalia / Dance/Ceremonial Traditions – This workshop is exhilarating, energetic, and teaches empowering dances of West Africa and Ghana. Along with getting a great workout, participants will learn different traditional fashions and the cultural and social meaning of the dance movements.
  • Cultural African Ensemble – Through this workshop and ensemble performance will commemorate the occasion with family and friends of participants.

There is no charge for attending the exhibition and workshops.  We do appreciate any donations to help fund future events.

Step into the Rhythm: West African Drums Exhibition: The exhibition will showcase 27 drums from different parts of West Africa. To name a few drums; Dundun, Djembe, Kete, Atimevu, Kota, Kpalongo, and Fontomfrom drums. The history, origin, shape, and size of the drums will be displayed.

Step into the Rhythm: Health and Wellness Workshop is a dance and fitness workshop suitable for youth and adults. The workshop uses djembe techniques – the djembe is a rope-tied drum – whose name comes from the saying “Anke djé, anke bé” which translates to “everyone gather together in peace.” West African Dance fitness (a combination of low and high-impact fitness) and a fusion of cultural traditions from various West African dances.

This program encourages participants to take control of their health and wellness, using traditional West African music, drums, and instruments. The workshop is for community participants interested in discovering the power of the drum and the rhythms of West Africa and Ghana.

The North Carolina African Film Festival is a creative exchange between cinematic enthusiasts and the filmmakers and content creators of Africa and the African Diaspora who showcase the artistry and global impact that films can have in closing cultural and educational gaps.
